The Indian School of Business evolved from the need for a world class business school in Asia. The School is associated with internationally renowned Business Schools like the Wharton School, Kellogg School of Management and London Business School. With a diverse mix of students from different industries, experiential and holistic learning, international faculty and students, and strong corporate involvement, life at the ISB is a unique experience for students, executives, faculty, staff and their families. And life after the ISB is never the same, a fact our alumni will vouch for. And as Mr. M Rammohan Rao writes in his Dean’s message, if figures are a yardstick to go by, the ISB has excelled from every viewpoint- the growing class size to the increasing number of resident faculty or the revenues from executive education- every indicator illustrates a glorious future for the School.
Programmes offered:
Full Time Post Graduate in Management
Post Doctoral programmes
Executive Education
- Open Enrolment Programmes : They are short duration programmes and usually run for 3-5 days. These programmes are best suited for senior executives and entrepreneurs from all industry sectors. They involve research based knowledge sharing in management subjects such as finance, marketing, strategy, leadership, and others. The specialized programmes in the sectors of Sports Fashion, Hospitality services etc have been introduced.
- General Management Programmes : These are high profile programmes for top management executives and for executives transitioning into general management roles after successfully heading different functions or departments. The programmes run for two to three weeks and often include a stint in leading school such as Kellogg.
- Custom Designed Programmes: The CEE designs special programmes for large organisations to address specific issues faced by them. CEE has enhanced its repertoire of programmes to include funded programmes, Certificate and Development Strategy, Collaborative Research, Expert Talk Series, Technology assisted Learning etc.
Eligibility Criteria PGP:
Students must possess an undergraduate/graduate or post-graduate degree in any discipline.
A minimum of two years’ full-time post qualification work experience is preferred.
A GMAT score
TOEFL/IELTS score is required for students from countries other than India, where English is not the primary language of instruction.
All short-listed applicants will be interviewed as a part of the selection process.
Selection Criteria PGP:
- Although there is no cut of score for undergraduate performance but considering that the PG programme is a rigorous one year programme, an applicant is expected to have a good academic record.
- Applicants with at least two years work experience are preferred but it’s career growth that adds weightage to applicant’s work experience.
- ISB looks for strong communication skills while evaluating the candidate. Essays, interviews, and GMAT Verbal score are taken as assessment mechanisms to evaluate this criterion. While personal qualities are judged through interviews and essays, GMAT score becomes an evaluator of applicant’s analytical qualities.
- ISB also look for leadership qualities in a candidate and this quality is evaluated with the help of recommendation letters. An applicant should submit at least two recommendation letters and the recommendations should come preferably from the direct supervisor.
- According to Mr. V. K. Menon, Senior Director, Admission and Financial Aid, “ISB seeks demonstrated initiative and leadership potential, consistently good academic performance, strong communication skills, team playing and other contributing participative learning skills in prospective applicants.”
Application Fee: INR 3000 (or USD 75). Payment via a credit card or internet banking (ICICI Bank only).
GMAT- Mandatory for the admission and in case an applicant submits more than one score, the higher score would be considered (provided it is within the validity period of five years). It takes atleast 2-3 weeks for the official GMAT score to reach ISB. It is strongly recommended that applicants plan and book the GMAT test dates well in advance. CAT/GRE scores are not accepted by the ISB in lieu of GMAT scores.
Average GMAT(2009) -714
Range - 580-780
TOEFL/IELTS: A TOEFL/IELTS score is required for non-Indian students who did not have ENGLISH as the primary language of instruction during their undergraduate studies.
Age Distribution:

Interviews: All short listed candidates would be interviewed and there is no group discussion. ISB representatives will conduct personal interviews in Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad only. International applicants can have a telephonic interview.
Sample Interview Questions:
- What do you do at work?
- Is there anything that you would like to tell the admission committee that you have not mentioned in your application?
- How would you garner more business from your client?
- Discuss an example of leadership shown at work.
- What are your positive attributes?
- Why do you want to do an MBA? Why do you want to do it now?
- Why ISB?
- Name top three e-commerce sites.
- Which countries have you lived in?
- Why would you call yourself a team player?
- How do you deal with conflict at work?
- Do you know any foreign language? How has it helped you in a foreign land?
- Why MBA? And what you would like to do post MBA?
- Discuss your extra curricular activities.
- What will you add to ISB community?
- How are you different from other software professionals?
- Is ISB your first choice?
Reservations- There are no quotas for NRI’S/SC/ST/BC. Both international and foreign students would be evaluated on the same basis.
Work Experience: Work experience should be full-time; part-time work experience will not be considered. Army work experience is considered as a work experience. In case of Family owned Business, the experience should be full-time and should be supported with relevant documents in application. The quality and relevance of your experience in business will be critical. Applicant will still have to furnish recommendations. Recommendations from applicant’s father, friends and family will not be accepted. One should furnish recommendation from people with whom he/she has a strictly professional interaction like clients, vendors etc.
Extra Curricular Activities- The ISB would like to admit well-rounded students. Extra-curricular activities add that extra dimension to an applicant’s personality. In the US it is routine for people to do community service, which they can mention as an extra-curricular activity in their applications. But Indian conditions are different, so not having done such activities is understandable. However, if you look deep down, you may find some things that you may have been doing. Did you tutor a kid anytime, did you organize a festival in your apartment complex, did you volunteer your time in some campaign or raise funds for some cause, etc.? If you haven’t done anything at all, it’s never too late to start. Don’t do it just to get your B-school admission, but do what interests you. If you are in the IT area, think of something related to IT that you can do after office hours. How about persuading your company to donate their obsolete computers to charity? The possibilities are endless.
Course Commencement:The course begins in April every year and it is a 1 year residential programme. The programme is specially designed for professionals with work experience so it is highly recommended to apply with full time work experience of at least two years.
Families: Families are an integral part of ISB community and special care is taken at ISB to make family life comfortable and fun. Most married students usually opt to live in single-bedroom furnished apartments, which include a fully equipped kitchen. Some of the family-friendly facilities on campus include a children’s play area, a grocery store, a coffee shop and an infirmary. Family members can use the on-campus recreational facilities such as the swimming pool, gym and game courts. Spouses and partners of students are invited to most campus events and the library even has a special children’s section. Families are encouraged to participate in all aspects of life at the ISB, creating a sense of belonging and identity.

Hello,
Currently I am working in Infosys BPO Ltd, for last 1 year.
I hold a strong desire of doing PG (MBA) from ISB.
So I just required the information regarding, what to do for getting Admissiion into ISB and what steps I should follow from now onwards.
Please Suggest me…….
Waiting for Ur reply…..
Hi Sami,
Have you taken GMAT or are you yet to take?
Hi,
I have done B.E in Mechanical engineering from a professional organisation and Masters in engineering (CAD/CAM)full time based on GATE score.
I have five years of work exp. after Master degree.
I am appearing for GMAT in March-09. Please let me know what is the minimum GMAT scotre required with this qualification and exp. to get into ISB.
Loking forward to your response.
Thanks & Regards,
Ashwini Mishra
Hi Ashwini,
If you have studied the pie chart that I have provided for GMAT Range, then you would have noticed that the maximum chunk is in the range of 700-740 GMAT score. Also I’d like to point here that GMAT score is not the maker or breaker for an admission in a B School, the overall profile should make a good fit.So even if you score not a very high score, the other aspects (Resume, interview, work experience, recommendations, extra curriculars) of your application should be able to cover for the low GMAT.
Your profile looks good and I think you should apply not only to ISB but also to some foreign schools. I’d suggest that you visit the websites of different schools and especially browse through the, programmes, culture and settings at school and then deicide the best for yourself.
As far as GMAT is concerned, March-09 is a good time to take the test. This would give you ample time for your application.
Hope this helps. If you have any other query, do let me know; I’d be glad to help.
My aplogies for the late reply. Wish you a very Happy New Year.
Dagny
Hello,
I have done BTech in Computer Science and have 3.5 years experience.
I hve been awarded the start performer of the year award twice by my organisation. I wanted to know whether these awards add weightage to my profile?
Hi Prashant,
They do.
hi
i did my masters in bioinformatics after i have one year work ex and after having one more year work ex will i be eligible for GMAT?
Hi Sheetal,
You need not have a work experience to take GMAT. Even B Schools don’t define the number of work experince that Business School Applicants need to have. If you take a look at the profiles of current class of most B Schools, you would find that the average work experince is around 3-4 years. This also means that a lot of freshers are also getting admissions considering the fact that the applicants have a strong overall profile. You can take GMAT anytime you are prepared to take it.

Hello,
I am a final year Hotel management student.I am looking for a job as an officer in the ground duty branch of Indian Air Force or a Probationary officer in Banking Sector. My ultimate dream is to pursue a PG(MBA) Programe from ISB,Hyderabad. So,does ISB consider the working experience of these two Government sectors preferably The Indian Air Force.please reply me as soon as possible so that I can decide whether to get into the Private or Government Sector
Hi Ankit,
Business Schools consider the full time work experince after your graduation. It does not matter whether you are working in a private or a government sector. Also read the following statement from ISB’s website :
“Applicants with atleast two years work experience are preferred but it’s career growth that adds weightage to applicant’s work experience. ”
Regarding the kind of work experince that shines in your application, you can read the following posts :

Hi Mnka,
I recently wrote a post on application strategy. Here it is:

As far as Extra curricular’s are concerned,

Amongst sports, I play basketball.
Wanted to know, If I can look for ISB with these credentials and what proof would I need for the EC’s mentioned.
Thanks, in anticipation.
-Tarun
Hi Tarun,
My first suggestion would be that you try to score high in GMAT, let’s say 720-730. A lot would also depend on how you would write your essays and bring forward your unique story in front of adcom.
As for the extracurriculars. you would need cerificates as a proof of whatever you have done so far. Also, you would have to write elaborately explaining the qualities that you have demonstarted through your extra curriculars. Read this: http://www.totalgadha.com/gmat/2009/02/if-you-dont-enhance-your-extra-curriculars-now-you-will-hate-yourself-later/
Try to get a recommendation letter from someone in the same arena who can talk extensively about your strengths and thereby, provide a strong support to your applicatiion.
hey this is arun i finished my btech in 2008 in computer science and engineering and iam presently working in wipro bpo in hp process as a technician ,iam working there from past 10 months i wqant to appear for gmat this year and i want to get into isb next year,so can u tell me where to start from…to step into isb
Hi Arun,
My suggestion would be that you work for a few more years before applying to a Bsuienss School. I would not say that people with less work experience don’t make it thorugh ISB but you would just be making competition tough for you. You have not mentioned anything about your GPA , and extracurriculars so I would not be able to comment much on your profile but if you think you have some oustanding credentials to make your candidature strong then, go for it.
You can start from taking GMAT by June end or July first week.
Hi Dagny,
I have 3 yrs of IT Experience.I started preparing for GMAT from last month and plannin to give it in September. Is that time sufficient.?Also is September the right time to give the test??Plz reply…
Hi Hrishi,
GMAT preparation does not take more than 2-3 months. This means you should effectively take GMAT by July. Why do you want to take it in the month of September?
Also, the application process would start in the month of July and your first deadline would fall somewhere near 15th Ococber. You would have loads of things to during July-October months such as writing essays, planning for scholarships, prepraing for interviews, getting your recommendations done so on and so forth. I suggest that you take the test by 10th July maximum so that you have ample time to give to your application. If needed, you would have time to retake the test as well. You would be late by September and end up rushing at things. I wrote an article on application startegy some time back. Read This: http://www.totalgadha.com/gmat/2009/04/mba-application-strategy-that-gets-you-in-your-dream-business-school/
Hi Dagny,
I just want to evaluate myself. Basically I am interested in all the PGPX courses around India. Basically the IIM and the ISB. I have only 2 years of experience . I could able to see that I need to have more than 5 years of Experience to do that.
Can I apply Now. I have done MCA from a premier institute(NIT ), and I was a Class topper in that. My academic profile is throughout 80%. I am a football player for company ans was also for the college.
Should I give it a try now , or I accumulate more experiences.
Thanks
Samrat
Hi Samrat,
I am afraid you are not eligible for the IIM PGPX programme. Here is the eligibility criteria from IIMA’s website-
What are the criteria for admission?
Admitted candidates should have good GMAT scores, a good academic record, a clear idea of why they prefer IIMA for doing their one year programme, leadership potential and substantial work experience that shows some evidence of a supervisory/managerial role in an organization that they have worked for.
What is ’substantial’ work experience?
Adhering to minimum age of 27 years at the start of the programme, a normal graduate should have 6 to 7 years of post qualification, full time work experience. Similarly, post graduate should have 5 to 6 years of experience. PhD/M.Phil can be evaluated on case to case basis.
As far as ISB goes, they prefer candidates who have a minimum of two years’ full-time post qualification work experience. This is one of the criteria. Your overall application would include your GMAT score, essays, transcripts, extracurriculars and community experience, if any. Your profile looks competitive except the work experience part. But at the end of the day, a lot would matter on how much you have gained from your experience and how well are you able to present your story to the admissions committe.
I suggest that you work really hard on scoring high in GMAT becasue your applicant pool consists of high scoreres. A high score would give an edge to your overall profile. When do you plan to take the GMAT?
hello dagny,
i am dharmendra reddy.I have my own gold business.I have been with gold business since 3 years.Regading to education,I have completed my MCA with 69.45% and graduation with 74%.Will i give up Gmat exam?Do i have chance to place in ISB?
waiting you to here back.
thanking you
Hi Dharmendra,
You would definitely have an edge over the large applicant pool. The only thing that you would have to justify is why you want to do an MBA. Your essays, and interview will help you in selling yourself to the admissions committee, When do you plan to take the GMAT?
I have 2years 7months IT work experience in Satyam Computer Services Ltd.Received organisation level awards in my company.I have the habit of doing social service.Taking GMAT on 19Aug2009.Planning to apply in this year.
But my BTech score is 64%.Please guide me on all aspects like the expected GMAT score and the the points to be mentioned in optional essays and also in all aspects as i have very low btech percentage. Please guide me in all my application process as i have low btech percentage.
Hi Veena,
Regarding your GMAT, I suggest that you look at a score of atleast 700. My next post is on optional essay only so give me a day or two and you would be able to extract some decent information.
dear sir
my past acedemics are not good.it’s like60% in 10th,52% in 12th,57%in graduation and 60%in msc(math).and if i garner good gmat score, good at eassy, and having 5 yrs work ex ,extra curricular activities like arranged polio drop for pepole and fecilitate it.so,is poor acedemics will go against me.will i be able to corner a seat for myself.thank you

Nanyang Business
Can you let me know if I stand chance at any of the schools mentioned above? Your thoughts are really appreciated. Thanks

Hi Dagny,
My profile is as follows:
BE (Elect & Telecom), ‘98
Since then I have worked in various functions in IT Consulting, from development, consulting, support, pre-sales, project mgmnt, people mgmnt,…etc. Have also worked overseas in various countries for a number of years. Currently working as a Senior Manager for Oracle Consulting.
I have been considering a management degree for some time now but haven’t managed to appear for the GMAT due to my constant travel. I plan on appearing for my GMAT in about 4 months time. Wanted to get clarifications on certain points.
1) Is ISB a worthwhile choice given my profile (11 yrs of work-ex as of Sept ‘09)? Can I get the most out of it keeping in mind my motives for such a course (’edge’, the additional push I need to get into executive mgmnt, substantial increase in pay, exposure, possibly switch domains)?
2) What sort of a GMAT score should I be looking at? I do not have any substantial extra-curricular activities to show.
Thanks in advance!
Regds,
Raj
Hi Raj,
What kind of exposure are you looking for and what kind of pay increase do you have in mind?
Hi Dagny,
Thanks for your prompt response.
I am looking at a pay increase of at least 75% to justify the cost of the course, loss in earnings for that year and also make up for the missed annual pay hike cycle.
I am looking at exposure to professionals from various other businesses, fresh ideas and perspectives in an academic atmosphere and also networking. From the course and faculty I would be looking at an introduction to cutting edge business practices in the areas of marketing and business strategy and of course the right jargon.
Would the ISB course be worthwhile for all of this?
Also, do I stand a good chance securing admission to this course?
Thanks & Regds,
Raj
Hi Dagny,
To add to my previous post, after this course I would be looking at securing a strategic management role in an IT/ITeS organization or a strategy consulting role or offer advisory services to companies looking to offshore IT/ITeS services, something on these lines.
Thanks & Regds,
Raj
Hi Raj,
To give you an idea about placement statistics, here they are : http://www.isb.edu/PGP/Placement_Highlights.Shtml
I don’t know what your current salary is so you can check the above link and get a rough idea about how much increase you can expect.
Another thing to notice is that the situation of market had not been very good in past one year so the salaries have gone drastically down-how much things are going to improve in the coming year is difficult to say. Things would be even difficult for you if you would change careers after joining a business school.
In terms of exposure, only 3% of the class has international students. ISB has come a long way but it will take a lot many years to get a global diversity in its class. Similarly, you will have most of your alums Indians only.
Coming to your workexe- 80% class has work experience in range of 2-7 years. So your peer group would mostly be younger candidates. (http://www.isb.edu/PGP/2010Profile.Shtml) The GMAT Score range for ISB is 680-760. We Indians are pretty good at cracking standardized tests.
My personal suggestion would be that you look at one year programmes in Europe and UK. Those are international programmes and would suit your profile better both in terms of exposure and learning.
For your extracurricular activities, I suggest that you pick up one and follow it religiously. You might bring a lot of perspective from your work place and life but schools would also like you to contribute to their clubs, recruitments and other extracurriculars.
Thanks a lot for your help Dagny!!
I was considering all my options and Europe/UK is one of them.
One reservation I had was to do with the downturn. As part of my current work I need to study market situations and trends across the world and things in Europe and the UK are looking, at best, slightly bleak for the next few years. This rules out quite a few avenues in terms of job opportunities, but at the same time opens up certain others.
Be that as it may, which institutes would you suggest?
And are the pre-requisites generally simlar to ISB? (high GMAT, good essay, work-ex, extra-curricular activities)
Thanks & Regds,
Raj
